Half-baked spam legislation

The latest bill designed to curtail the unsolicited junk e-mail known as spam has
been revised by a House Judiciary Committee, weakening its original aggressive stance
against spammers. Specifically, the committee cut provisions that gave consumers
the right to sue companies that fail to remove their names from bulk e-mail lists.
The revised bill will now move to the House Rules Committee, which will determine
whether this new version, or a more stringent version approved by the Energy and
Commerce Committee in March, will make it to the full House.
